Moyamba District Youth participants at the eUplift Climate Challenge

The youth of Sierra Leone are stepping into the climate arena with force, armed with innovative solutions and the backing of international organizations, through the recent eUpshift Climate Challenge.

The event was spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation and the Directorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), in collaboration with UNICEF. The challenge ignited the entrepreneurial spirit of over 5,200 young people across 12 districts.

Through rigorous training and dedicated mentorship, these aspiring innovators transformed their nascent ideas into tangible solutions, tackling the pressing issues of climate change head-on, addressed the nation’s environmental challenges, showcasing the dividends of the investment.

Delivery was further bolstered by the expertise of Restless Development, Afriqia HR Solutions, and Craft Human Resources. The final pitch showcased the culmination of this effort, with the top five teams unveiling groundbreaking innovations that address critical environmental needs.

From sustainable reforestation strategies and advanced waste management systems to innovative approaches to sustainable farming and clean water access, these young entrepreneurs demonstrated a deep understanding of local challenges and a keen ability to develop practical, scalable solutions.

They offered promising pathways toward climate resilience and sustainable development, positioning the nation at the forefront of a new wave of climate tech.

UNICEF Deputy Representative Liv Elin Indreiten captured the significance of the event, and highlighted that the young participants, irrespective of winning, already demonstrated their capacity to be powerful drivers of meaningful change.

This sentiment underscores the broader potential of investing in youth-led initiatives, not just as a response to climate change, but as a strategic imperative for economic growth and national development.

The eUpshift Climate Challenge was not merely a competition; but a catalyst, empowering new generations of Sierra Leonean entrepreneurs to build a sustainable and foster a vibrant green tech ecosystem.
