Makeni city, in the northern province of Sierra Leone, buzzed with activity recently as the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICEC), with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched its nationwide Civic Day Series.

The initiative, designed to foster direct dialogue between the government and its citizens, kicked off with a town hall-style meeting focusing specifically on the youth of Sierra Leone, to strengthen democratic processes, cultivate a more informed and active citizenry, and ultimately contribute to sustainable national development.

The session brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, civil society organizations, media representatives, and experts from key governmental bodies. Notable participants included representatives from NACCED_SL, the Public Sector Reform Unit, and the Ministry of Youth.

A well-informed and engaged citizenry is more likely to hold government accountable, fostering responsible fiscal management and promoting a level playing field for businesses. Moreover, by targeting youth, the engine of future economic growth, the series intend to cultivate a generation equipped with the civic awareness and leadership skills necessary to drive sustainable development.
