A major step toward advancing digital inclusion in Sierra Leone was unveiled recently at Africell’s headquarters with the launch of Safe2Buy, a flexible, savings-driven solution aimed at making smartphones and digital devices more affordable for everyday Sierra Leoneans.

The initiative, a collaboration between AfriMoney, MiKashBox, and Africell, the official distributor for Samsung and StarTimes, allows customers to save weekly or monthly toward digital products — with no loans, interest, or credit checks.

Opening the launch event, Fatmata Bah, head of social media at AfriMoney, asked a relatable question:

“Have you ever really wanted something — maybe even needed it — but couldn’t afford to pay for it all at once?”

She introduced Safe2Buy as a smart, interest-free alternative.

“Through the MiKashBox app, customers can now select a product — like a phone or smartwatch — and pay for it gradually. Once payments are completed, the product is theirs,” she said.

Rashidatu Sankoh from MiKashBox’s Customer Support Unit highlighted the platform’s inclusive approach.

“Safe2Buy is about building discipline and financial confidence. Whether you’re a market woman, student, or aspiring content creator — this platform helps you reach your goal,” she said.

MiKashBox, a homegrown fintech regulated by the Bank of Sierra Leone, currently serves over 20,000 users. Its offerings include interest-earning savings plans, digital osusu groups, and targeted product savings like Safe2Buy.

Joea Bangura, Africell’s corporate affairs officer, confirmed that a wide range of products is already available under the plan.

“From the Galaxy A6 to the latest S25, and even StarTimes decoders — customers can now ‘pay small, own big.’ These aren’t luxuries; they’re tools for learning, working, and growing,” he said.

Bangura noted that Africell worked closely with MiKashBox to design both the product lineup and the savings structure.

John Konteh, director of AfriMoney, described the initiative as a modern upgrade to traditional installment systems.

“Before, people had to walk up and down Siaka Stevens Street just to make installment payments. Now, you can do it from your home or office using AfriMoney,” he said.
