Africell Unveils AI-EVA and AfroGPT at summit

Africell on Wednesday launched two new artificial intelligence-powered tools — AI-EVA and AfroGPT — aimed at expanding digital inclusion and local language access across Sierra Leone, during the 2025 Sierra Leone Innovates Tech Summit.
The tools were unveiled as part of the summit’s focus on digital government and public-private innovation. Africell, one of the country’s largest mobile operators, introduced the AI platforms as part of its broader effort to bridge the digital divide.
AI-EVA, a voice-activated assistant, supports multiple local languages and operates on basic feature phones in addition to smartphones. The tool is designed to help users—especially in underserved or rural communities—access essential services and information through simple voice commands.
“AI-EVA was built to ensure no one is left behind,” said Africell’s Chief Technology Officer, Mohamed Turay. “Whether you're in a remote village or downtown Freetown, you should be able to talk to technology in a language you understand.”
AfroGPT, Africell’s second launch, is a localized large language model inspired by OpenAI’s GPT technology. The tool is designed to function offline and can provide educational support, translation, and conversational assistance without requiring an internet connection. It is tailored to reflect Sierra Leonean culture, languages, and educational curricula.
Company officials said AfroGPT would be piloted in schools and community centers beginning later this year.
“Technology needs to meet people where they are,” said Africell COO Malek El Koussa. “We believe AfroGPT can unlock knowledge and opportunity for students and families, even where connectivity is limited.”
The tools were showcased during the event at the Freetown International Conference Centre, which brought together government leaders, youth innovators, and global tech partners.
The summit, now in its second year, has become a key platform for Sierra Leone’s digital transformation agenda. Africell is one of several private sector partners supporting President Julius Maada Bio’s goal to build an inclusive, tech-enabled economy.
