APC lawmakers withdraw from parliament over Clerk

APC lawmakers withdraw from parliament over Clerk Lawmakers of All People’s Congress (APC)

Lawmakers of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) on Tuesday announced their immediate withdrawal from all parliamentary sessions and committee activities, citing concerns over the Clerk of Parliament’s involvement in partisan politics.

In a statement delivered, they said the decision followed a letter sent to the Clerk, who is reportedly seeking an executive position within his political party, a move the opposition says compromises the neutrality of the office.

“We believe this development fundamentally undermines the neutrality and integrity of the Clerk’s office, which is expected to remain strictly non-partisan in its service to Parliament,” the statement read.

“His open involvement in partisan politics is incompatible with the impartial and administrative responsibilities of his office.”

The APC said it had waited for nearly two weeks for a formal response to its letter but had received none. The party emphasized that the decision to suspend participation was a principled stand, not intended to disrupt governance.

“Parliament is a national institution that must be shielded from political bias at all administrative levels,” the statement continued. “The Clerk’s conduct seriously threatens public confidence in the institution’s independence and credibility.”

The opposition reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, institutional integrity, and the national interest. It said it would return to parliamentary engagement once a formal response is received and the issue is addressed.

“We will determine the appropriate next steps in defense of democratic accountability,” the APC said.

The Clerk of Parliament has not publicly responded to the allegations as of press time.
