Ambassador John Azuma, representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Sierra Leone, has affirmed the commitment of the regional body to the development of the country.

He made the affirmation during a press conference at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in Freetown on Wednesday, marking the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS.

'It is a privilege to be here and witness Sierra Leone's ambitious plans for this significant milestone,' he stated.

While emphasizing the event's theme: 'Stronger Together for a Brighter Future', Azuma said Sierra Leone's steadfast support for ECOWAS was well recognized, and that in turn, ECOWAS had consistently backed Sierra Leone.

Having recently taken up the role of ECOWAS Resident Representative, Ambassador Azuma made it clear that he was committed to working tirelessly in collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure ECOWAS's visibility and impact in Sierra Leone.

'This nation is not just Freetown; it encompasses all regions. Our mission is to connect with the people meaningfully. ECOWAS is about the people, and we are transitioning from an ECOWAS of states to an ECOWAS of the people,' he said.

Azuma reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening relationships, enhancing cooperation, and delivering the support that ECOWAS is duty-bound to provide Sierra Leone, especially in regional integration and the facilitation of free movement to improve lives.

'I look forward to engaging in our discussions and collaborating effectively to fulfill the vital role I am here to play in Sierra Leone,' he added.
